What BT Buys - Engineering Materials
 

Introduction

We manage the procurement of Engineering Materials required by BT's direct labour and third party engineering field force for installation and maintenance of BT's external Network.

 

Details

Connectors  
BT procures over 200 different types of connector for both Copper and Fibre cable for use within the external network as well as in the exchange environment.
The main types of connector are:
High Density Connectors
Cord Tests
Cord Connecting
Optical Termination
Connector Wire Insulated
Type 43/54 Connectors
Box Connexions
EPM and ECM 
 
Copper Cable  
BT procures around 500 different copper cable types ranging from 2000 pair telephone cable down to single conductor jumper wire. There is also a requirement for structured cabling and bespoke custom built cables. The cable is used by both BT direct labour and nominated installation contractors.  
 
External Plant  
BT procures a wide range of underground products that support the construction and maintenance of BT's network. These fall into 4 key ranges:
Frames and Covers
Duct and Sub-duct
Copper Closures
Ropes. 
 
Fibre Cable 
BT procures fibre cable and cable products which fall into three main categories:
Blown Cable -
fibre cables are blown into ducts
Blown Fibre Bundle -
groups of fibres that are blown into tubes contained in sub-ducts
Fibre Management - fibre management such as racks, cabinets, joints, etc.
The cable is used by both BT direct labour and nominated installation contractors.  
 
MDF Blocks 
BT procures a range of MDF Blocks that are used to connect lines within BT exchanges and house the protector modules.  
 
Network Termination  
BT procures many types Network Terminating Equipment (NTE). Each NTE provides differing levels of functionality. Future NTE developments are focussed around flexibility in the network. 
 
Packaging & Stillages 
BT procures a variety of packaging materials including cardboard boxes, plastic bags, shrink-wrap, stretch wrap, tape etc.  
 
Payphone Housing & Fabrics 
BT procures a range of Payphones Housings and associated Spares.
Products include:-
Hoods
Wallboards
Complete Housings
Housing Spares 
 
Payphones - Public Call Offices 
BT procures a range of products and spares used in supporting the street Payphone operation.

Payphone Services 
BT procures a range of Payphone Services including:
Cash Collection
Cleaning
Fabric Maintenance
Street Based Recovery
Advertising 
 
Private Payphone Products 
BT procures a wide range of products and spares used to support the Payphone operation. 
 
Poles & Poles Furniture 
BT procures wooden poles, metallic hollow poles as well as two different ranges of metallic and plastic pole furniture. All are used to maintain the overhead network within BT. 
 
Racks & Cabinets 
BT procures a range of Racks and Cabinets. These fall into three main categories:
1. Metalwork used within the telephone exchange (exchange racks, frames, overhead ironwork and rack installation parts (brackets, nuts and bolts)).
2. Generic Cabinets - a range of various sized cabinets and ancillary items which are used to house Access Network Equipment and other Telecoms equipment sited at Customer Premises.
3. External roadside cabinets. 
  
Testers 
BT procures Test Equipment that is used for fault location and identification through to performance and verification on Copper, Optical, Transmission and Radio services.  
 
Tools & Consumables 
BT procures a wide range of tools and consumables covering all engineering activity ranging from simple screwdrivers up to complex gas detection equipment.

There are no current or forthcoming requirements for this domain.
